Eligibility for Oklahoma License Plates
Residents starting employment in Oklahoma must register their vehicles within 30 days from the date of hire. Non-residents staying more than 60 days have the same requirement. Section 47, § 1125 of the Oklahoma Statutes sets both deadlines.
- Residence: Employment triggers the 30-day countdown; prolonged stay triggers the 60-day countdown. Vehicles purchased in-state must be fully registered within two months from the date of sale through the Ready, Set, Tag process effective September 1, 2024.
- Vehicle: All motor vehicles, motorcycles, travel trailers, and manufactured homes operated on public roads require current registration. Vehicles with a salvage notation or junk titles block the issuance of standard license plates until the vehicle is restored and inspected through a serial hold inspection.
- Applicant: A valid driver’s license and proof of Oklahoma insurance are required at registration. Service Oklahoma’s required documents page lists accepted identity and residency documents.
- License Plate Categories: Disabled veteran, Purple Heart recipient, POW, Congressional Medal of Honor awardee, Pearl Harbor survivor, and Killed in Action plates require military certification per Section 47, § 1136. Personalized plates carry a separate annual fee; collegiate and organizational plates have their own qualification rules.
How to Get a License Plate in Oklahoma?
Initial registration is conducted through Service Oklahoma at headquarters in Oklahoma City or any licensed operator location statewide. Oklahoma assigns plates to people, not vehicles, so existing owners can transfer a plate to a new purchase.
- For out-of-state transfers, bring the foreign title, completed Form 701-6, a valid driver’s license, and proof of Oklahoma insurance. The vehicle must be present for a VIN inspection at the office.
- Oklahoma does not require safety or emissions inspections for registration or renewal. The only inspection is a VIN check ($4) for out-of-state vehicles and used vehicles marked with a serial hold.
- Pay registration fees, excise tax, and title fee at the counter. The agent issues a standard plate and sticker on-site. Titles are mailed within two business days if there is no lien; otherwise, they are sent to the lienholder.
- Renewal is done annually or biennially, at the owner’s choice (available November 1, 2023). Owners can renew online through Navigate, in person at a licensed operator, or at Service Oklahoma headquarters. A 30-day grace period follows expiration before penalties apply.

Can I Get a License Plate Online in Oklahoma?
Online service only covers renewals. Initial titles, out-of-state transfers, and special plate orders require an in-person visit. The state Navigate portal handles annual and biennial renewals and accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.
- For in-person transactions, visit any licensed operator location or Service Oklahoma headquarters on N Classen Boulevard in Oklahoma City. Many locations accept walk-ins and offer online check-in with live wait times.
- Mail service is limited to duplicate title requests. Send Form 701-7 and an $11 fee to Service Oklahoma, Motor Vehicle Division, P.O. Box 26800, Oklahoma City, OK 73126.
If Navigate can process your renewal, use it; office visits are intended for initial titles and anything the portal does not cover.
